'Bath With A Friend' by Andy Hollyhead
"Everyone remembers the Summer of '76. Britain was sweltering in the oppressive heat. Now it was the end of July, and the long summer holiday stretched ahead of me. My first year as a primary teacher had been tough - but I had survived, simply rolling lesson plans forward from this year to the next and I would be prepared.
As the holidays dragged on however I became bored in my small rented flat, and I did not yet have the cash or inclination to head off on holiday on my own. Daily relief came from the short walk to the local swimming baths, attendants sectioning off a part of the pool for us serious swimmers, to leave the rest of the pool for screaming kids.
Each day I met, and fell into conversation with Pete, who like myself took ample opportunity to use the showers in the changing area. His blonde, shoulder-length hair took prodigious amounts of Vosene to maintain its lustre. But it wasn't his hair that I was interested in, my eyes inevitably wandering downwards to his Speedos.
As did his.
'Seen this leaflet? Save water - Bath with a friend.'
'Sounds good!'
'Fancy trying it tonight?' It was clear that I did.
Unfortunately, I was unaware that Billy Roe, whom I had taught the year before was there with his Father, the school governor. They heard and saw the exchange, and before the end of the Summer of '76, I was searching for another job, and career."
